Prepare your garden now for spring rewards

As the leaves turn and the air cools, autumn offers the perfect opportunity to prepare your garden for the months ahead. This is particularly true if you are preparing your home for sale, when a well-kept garden enhances that all-important first impression.

Autumn is the ideal time to plant bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, and alliums, in readiness for spring. Trees, shrubs, and hardy perennials also thrive when planted now, taking advantage of soil which is still warm, enabling them to establish strong roots before the cold and frost sets in.

Soil benefits from being enriched with compost or well-rotted manure and a layer of mulch locks in warmth and moisture. Clearing fallen leaves, aerating compacted areas, and reseeding any bare patches should also form part of a comprehensive autumn programme of works.

Meanwhile, don’t neglect your tools! A good clean now will reap benefits in the long run.

Ben Furnell, managing director of Furnell Residential, says; “Everybody likes outdoor space and a well maintained garden is an important feature when it comes to selling.”
